A batch — often used interchangeably with the term lot — is a defined quantity of material produced together under the same conditions. Batch documentation is the set of records that describes and identifies that specific quantity. Where a catalog record describes a material in general, batch documentation describes the particular batch in your hands. It is the difference between knowing what a material is and knowing which exact production of it you are reviewing.
The lot number is the anchor
Every batch is assigned a lot or batch number, a unique identifier that ties together the physical material, its Certificate of Analysis, and its supporting records. That identifier is what makes traceability possible. If a question arises about a material weeks or months later, the lot number allows the material to be matched back to the exact analysis and documentation that describe it. Without a lot number, a certificate would float free of the batch it is supposed to represent; with it, the record and the material stay connected.

Analytical results describe the batch they were measured on. A Certificate of Analysis is meaningful only in relation to a specific lot number — which is why batch-level traceability underpins the whole documentation system.
What batch records capture

- Date of analysis — when the testing was performed.
